The Library Routes Project was set up in October 2009 (see About for more details), to bring together the thoughts and experiences of Information Professionals on how they got where they are today, and why they chose to work in libraries at all.
Welcome to the Library Routes Project!
The idea is to document either or both of your library roots - how you got into the profession in the first place, and what made you decide to do so - and your library routes - the career path which has taken you to wherever you are today. As well as being interesting of itself, it will also provide much needed information and context for those just entering the profession or wishing to do so.
How does it work?
If you're a blogger, then either write a blog on your roots / routes, or dredge up one you've already written, and link to the post below. Put your real name and current job if you feel comfortable doing so, and a link to your blog.
If you want to get involved but don't currently have time to blog on the subject, just add your details and then come back and add the link to your blog post later, once you've written it.
In order to edit this page and contribute, you'll need to register - it takes less than a minute.
Non-bloggers welcome...
Not a blogger? No problem, we want to hear from you anyway. If you don't blog or otherwise have anywhere online to write down your roots / routes and link to, then just create a post on this wiki, then link to it below. See this creating entries guide for more info - it's very easy to create an article on here, as it uses the same software as Wikipedia.

Adding your details is easy to do. Click the 'Edit' button at the top-right of this section (or click here), and then simply change one of the lines from 'Insert name here' etc to your name (or your blogging name, or just 'anonymous' if you'd prefer) and other details. To link to your blog post, press the External link button on the tool-bar (you'll see the tool-bar once you've clicked 'edit'; the External Link button is the little picture of the globe, 4th in from the left) and then type the URL of your post - not just your whole blog - (including the full http:// bit), a space, and then the name of your blog.
Once you're happy, press 'Save Page' in the bottom left hand corner. Don't worry, you can't break anything - if you accidentally wipe the whole thing, we can get it back!
(See this editing guide for more help. NB: If two or more people edit and resave this page at exactly the same time, it'll only save one of them. This has actually happened! So if, when you press Save page, it doesn't appear to have stored your details, you may need to re-input them. Sorry about this, there's really no way round it...)
Feel free to use a pseudonym (or blogging name) if you'd prefer not to use your real name, but please try to avoid leaving the 'name' column blank. If you'd prefer not to identify your place of work that's also fine, but it'd be nice to have an idea of what you do - a job title or just a vague description of your work is really helpful to people reading.
